Leadership by Thaba Tseka District Coordinator; Mr Mokobocho

“If you want to make everyone happy, do not be a leader, sell ice cream” Steve Jobs said this to emphasise that leaders are the kind of people entrusted with taking huge decisions of which some may not sit well with some people. No matter how bitter tasting the medicine may be, the patient must take. Leadership is a very complex paradigm encompassing several qualities: flexibility and adaptability, the capacity to take difficult decisions and ability to resolve disputes just to mention a few constituents. The blanket leadership requires an active and continuous learner, for one to succeed in this sphere, he/she should keep on honing their personal attributes either be mimicking past leaders, engaging in forums or attending some lectures.

Since my appointment to this role, I have experienced a series of challenges akin to a roller coaster ride. Navigating numerous demanding situations has underscored the importance of emotional intelligence. Holding a position of authority presents psychological challenges, as it requires managing diverse personalities and fostering a cohesive, well-coordinated team. The effectiveness of a team hinges on the leader’s ability to provide clear direction and actively engage in the day-to-day operations, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the activities in the field.

Some team members usually voluntarily test one’s mental strength in a sense that, some advertently cause mischief to perceive the reaction of a leader and if such a leader is not emotionally astute, he/she may find him/herself spiralling down a road of degradation. One must first soak in, analyse and reflect on the situation prior taking any action whatsoever because acting during the heat of the moment usually instigates ample uncalled for status quo. This only launches from the leadership style one employs but should be flexible enough to effect changes should such need arise.

I have experienced significant personal growth as I have encountered numerous thought-provoking situations that required me to take a leadership role and address conflicts. For instance, I once intervened in an office dispute among team members, working to resolve the situation amicably to ensure the team’s effective functioning. It is crucial for team members to maintain a positive morale, as discontent or stress can lead to diminished performance. Unfortunately, some employers may lack empathy, and poor results can result in disciplinary actions such as expulsion or written warnings. Thus, fostering a supportive and motivating environment is essential for achieving optimal outcomes.

Furthermore, my communication skills have been refined significantly as I have engaged with diverse groups of individuals, some of whom present unique challenges. Additionally, I have enhanced my public speaking abilities, as a leadership role often entails delivering presentations and facilitating capacity-building activities. I have learned that to ensure my team’s success, it is essential to have a strategic plan in place, establish guiding principles for the team, and create a routine that serves as a roadmap for our objectives.

I make it a priority to document all significant details and display them prominently in the office to ensure accessibility for everyone. In conclusion, it is important to distinguish between being a manager and being a leader: leaders create a vision, while managers set specific goals. The essence of effective leadership relies on a willingness to learn, being open to feedback, and embracing the opportunity to grow from mistakes. In addition to navigating the challenges and implementing strategies for effective leadership, holding a position of authority requires maintaining a level-headed demeanor and exercising emotional intelligence.
