Commemorating World AIDS Day 2024: Taking the Rights Path

On November 29, 2024, the Bacha Re Bacha Youth Forum successfully hosted a transformative World AIDS Day pre commemoration under the global theme,“Take the Rights Path.” The event, which took place in Leribe District, brought together people living with HIV (PLHIV), community members, government officials, civil society organizations (CSOs), healthcare providers, and youth advocates to stand in solidarity and promote rights-based approaches to HIV.

The day began with a solidarity march from the Bacha Re Bacha offices to Matukeng Park, led by key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and partners like m2m, Baylor, Sentebale, and NAC. Participants, dressed in themed T-shirts and holding banners, marched to raise awareness about the rights and health needs of PLHIV while calling for an end to stigma and discrimination.

Key Highlights of the Event:

Official Speeches and Solidarity Messages:

Opening remarks were delivered by local and district leaders, including the Principal Chief, the District Administrator, and the District Medical Officer (DMO).
The UNAIDS Country Ambassador provided a compelling keynote address emphasizing the importance of addressing stigma and ensuring access to healthcare for all.
Inspirational messages from youth leaders, including Tlalane Raliengoane, a Young Emerging Leader (YEL), and Nthabeleng Ntsekalle, Her Voice Fund Ambassador, highlighted the vital role of youth in advocating for change.
Solidarity messages from partners such as the Global Fund PMU, NAC, and other local organizations reinforced the collaborative efforts needed to improve HIV responses.

Interactive Dialogue:

A panel discussion, led by PLHIV, provided a platform for candid conversations about stigma, discrimination, and the struggles faced by key populations. The dialogue encouraged open participation, fostering greater understanding and empathy within the community.

Service Booths:

Healthcare providers offered integrated services at designated booths, including HIV testing, screening for other illnesses, counseling, and referrals. This hands-on approach ensured attendees could access immediate support while addressing healthcare gaps in the community.
Celebration and Unity:

The event concluded with a community celebration, where attendees reflected on the day’s activities and expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown.
